HOKA has once again raised the bar in trail running with the launch of the Mafate 5, the latest iteration of its iconic off-road franchise. Designed for long-haul trail efforts, the Mafate 5 combines durability, adaptability, and comfort, all while introducing a breakthrough feature: Rocker Integrity Technology.
This new innovation, built around a light, pliable TPU plate, helps the shoe maintain its rocker shape over extended distances. Sandwiched between two layers of foam—a firmer SCF EVA directly underfoot and a softer CMEVA beneath—the result is a suspended ride that feels both responsive and adaptive. Every stride delivers a snappy toe-off while still absorbing the uneven terrain that trails are known for.

The outsole is equally trail-ready, built with Vibram Megagrip and Traction Lug technology for grip and control across a range of surfaces. For the upper, HOKA has rethought durability, introducing a flow-molded TPU cage that wraps the foot in 360-degree protection. Subtle design details nod to the Mont Blanc UTMB course map, a tribute to the ultramarathon roots of the Mafate line.
I had the chance to test the Mafate 5 myself a couple of months ago during an experience trail hosted by HOKA at Timberland Highlands in Antipolo, Rizal. The rugged paths, alternating between rocky stretches and softer forest trails, gave me a real sense of how the shoe adapts to shifting terrain. The ride felt steady and cushioned even when the path demanded more focus, and the grip from the outsole gave me confidence on tricky downhills.

While the technology speaks volumes on paper, that short time on the trails showed me how the Mafate 5 manages to balance protection with responsiveness—something that stands out when every step matters.
Another first for the brand: the Mafate 5 has been built with gaiter integration. While sold separately, the gaiter option allows runners to keep rocks and debris out of their shoes, extending the promise of uninterrupted performance.

Bekah Broe, HOKA’s senior director of product for performance footwear, said the Mafate 5 was crafted specifically with the challenges of ultra-runners in mind. “We know every stride counts, and our updates to the Mafate 5 will give runners the confidence and support they need to tackle the trail, no matter how grueling it gets out there,” she said.
The shoe carries an 8mm heel-to-toe drop and comes in at 10.1 ounces (285 grams) for women’s size 8 and 11.7 ounces (332.3 grams) for men’s size 10.
The HOKA Mafate 5 is now available at HOKA exclusive stores in One Ayala Mall, GH Mall, SM Aura, Ayala Malls Manila Bay, and R.O.X. Bonifacio High Street.
